Breaking Benjamin - The Diary of Jane
Music Video: Breaking Benjamin – Diary of Jane
Genre: Rock
This narrative music video begins with panning long shots of the location of the video the music video reveals that they are in an abandoned mansion, which is a convention in a lot of popular rock music videos.
With an establishing long shot of the band in a large room filled with furniture you would expect to find in this location. The music video then cuts to a shot of a woman in a bathtub whose eyes open on beat to when the guitars and drums strat.
The natural lighting seems very dull and low key; this connotes a dark atmosphere to match the genre of the music. Most of the shots are close ups and mid shots on the lead singers face. Others consist of long shots of the whole band together with one or two close ups of the other band members.
Shots of the woman roaming about the mansion connects with the music lyrics as they refer to the woman how she is dressed in a white gown (conveys innocence) and how the whole song about “the diary of Jane”. A link between the visuals and the lyrics how the singer says, “look the other way” it then cuts to the mid shot of the woman as she turns to look over her shoulder.
Shots between the band and the woman seem to be from two different worlds. When the woman enters the same room as the band, the band is not there. This is an example of cross cutting where the two shots meet in one place. However, how the band disappears as the woman enters the room suggests that either the woman or the band members are ghosts.
There is some camera shake used in this music video, this is as the music kicks in and the shake matches the movements that the band members create.
The costume of the band members and their arrangement are all stereotypes of heavy rock music what they wear is stereotypical because it is mostly all black clothing and bandannas and the main singer is stood at the front as main focus of the audience’s attention. The guitarist and bass player are behind the singer and the drummer is at the back behind the singer.
