Costume

The costume in our music video will be pretty stereotypical for rock music videos. We will be casting ourselves as the band members and we will be wearing a majority of black clothing. The black clothing will appeal to the audience as it follows the clothing style that the band members and audience share. And as for the bullies they will be dressed in regular clothing appropriate for their age range, jeans, shirt/jumper ect..

As you can see from the image (right) the audience that would follow this music genre wear this style of clothing. Mostly dark clothing with a black t-shirt. Jeans are there choice of clothing some wearing skinny jeans and wearing different styles in woollen jackets.

The target audience could also be found with piercings on their faces and tattoo's on their bodies and arms.

Following the trends of the target audience we can appeal to the target audience by wearing the same style of clothing in our music video.

Production treatment

Song Title: Bully

Artist: Three Days Grace

Genre: Rock

Length of song: 3:39

We decided to choose “Three Days Grace- Bully” for our music video as we feel there are a lot of things we can do with the song. We have decided to go for a narrative approach for our music video since the song uses a lot of lyrics and tells the audience a story of how the mind set of the bullies are put forward to ordinary people and that they are damaged and vulnerable. The intended audience for our music video is both male and females who are quite gothic and are aged 13-25 as this is stereotypical age group for this type of music in the rock genre. The older generation may also find this song appealing because it is still from the rock genre however, it is intended for the younger generation of rock fans as they tend to listen to this type of rock more often, whereas older people tend to listen to music that existed when they were young.

The General idea for our video is about how the mindset of bullies is put forward to ordinary people through violence. The main focus point for the video is of a boy and a girl. Throughout the video, the boy is being tortured by voices in his head and the girl appears to be alone without any friend, suggesting that they are the victims of bullying. The message that the song is trying to put across is that it is not the family’s or friends fault that bullies are created, it is the bully himself who has problems which have not been resolved and this is making them act out. This is put across to the audience in the song when it says: “maybe they just needed to be wanted”, suggesting that they feel lonely and by themselves when they need help.

We have decided to choose a variety of different locations for our music video that will fit in with the song and the lyrics for example, the dark, dim bedroom is relevant as the opening lyrics talk about how: “He wakes up Haunted” so the use of dim lighting will create a disturbing effect. Also, the Purgatory setting for the band members matches the stereotypical location for many rock bands, as the fully white background will display the band well. As well as this, the woodland will create a dark effect and will fit well with the rock genre.

Furthermore, we have decided that we are going to portray the lead singer as a ghost that narrates the song, as the singer is the person who tells the audience what is going on. As well as this, all the actors will be wearing dark clothing to portray the stereotypical rockstar image that is used by most Rock Bands.

Also, we have decided it would be a good idea to use a blue sepia effect on all the shots of the bullies as blue is seen as a dark and depressing colour so it would be effective to use as it will portray to the audience that they are the bullies.

Recording Days

We plan to use Wednesday’s lesson to film our music video, as well as filming at the weekends and Monday afternoons, as these are the days that we are all available for filming. On Fridays, our time will be spent using the green screen to film our purgatory shots and we plan to finish all our editing over a 3-week period once all the filming is complete.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Can't Stop (Video)

We have decided to focus on the performance aspect for the instumental segment of our music video.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers are a good example of this because there clips in there music video's are completely random and have no link to the music.

Three Days Grace - Bully [Lyrics & HQ Audio]

We have chosen Three Days Grace - The Bully for our music video as the song does not have a video of its own and we felt like we could create our own artistic ideas

Bully Lyrics

He wakes up haunted
With voices in his head
Nobody knows it but today he won't go unnoticed
He can't forget
Can't forgive for what they've said
He's never been so hurt
But today the screaming is over

Blame the family
Blame the bully
Blame it on me
Maybe he needed to be wanted
Blame the family
Blame the bully
Maybe he needed to be wanted

She takes the long way home
Fighting her emotions
She's a loner but today she won't go unnoticed
If she can remember
When she loses a temper
Nobody knows her
But tonight the silence is over

Blame the family
Blame the bully
Blame it on me
Maybe she needed to be wanted
Blame the family
Blame the bully
Blame it on me
Maybe she needed to be wanted

( Instrumental )

Blame the family
Blame the bully
Blame it on me
Maybe they needed
Blame the family
Blame the bully
Maybe they needed to be wanted
Blame the family
Blame the bully
Blame it on me
Maybe they needed to be wanted
Wanted

Korn - Freak On A Leash

Music video: Korn- Freak On A Leash

Genre: Rock

The video opens up with a quick animation, along with an instrumental that starts with the song. at the end of the animation, we can see that the guard appears to shoot his gun. The camera follows this bullet which flies through the air, past all the children in slow motion, then enters reality as it tears through a poster in a girls bedroom. It then crashes through a lava lamp in slow motion to create an effect, and exits the room through a wooden board that is hung up on the bedroom wall. We then see that it crashed through the kitchen, destroying a piece of pottery in the process. The bullet then exits the house, where the camera cuts to show the band members in a room which is lit by artificial lighting through many small holes that cover the ceiling and walls, suggesting they are bullet holes. A variety of medium and long shots are used to show the Band members. They are all dressed in black clothing which is a stereotypical dress sense for the genre, and which also suggests they are dark people. The lead singer has black dreadlocks and he is wearing a black kilt which is part of his rockstar image that he potrays throughout many of Korns music Videos. A lot of mid shots and close ups of the singer to create a focus point. After this, a cross cut is used to show the bullet once more flying down a street. It then enters into a back garden where a childrens party is taking place, bursting the balloons. Throughout the video, the bullet seems to be causing destruction in time to the beat of the song in slow motion. The bullet then travels through a gym in a house, and then through a korn poster in the room, creating a hole in the room where the band is playing, further suggesting that the holes were created by the bullet in the first place. The Bullet can then be seen moving towards the lead singers face. He responds by performing some kind of beat-boxing which makes the bullet move backwards away from him. It then proceeds to fly around the room, towards the other band members who make threatening faces, making the bullet move backwards again. After this, the instrumental kicks in again and the bullet then exits the room via the hole it came through, destroying a coffee machine, a magazine and a t.v. in the process, as well as narrowly avoiding a man jumping into a pool and a boy on a swing as it makes its way back to the hole it originally came from. The scene then finally cuts back to the animation that was seen at the start of the video, showing a girl catching the bullet and then dropping it into the security guards hand. The camera then pans back to a fence which has a warning sign on it, and the video ends. this video would agree with Goodwin's theory slightly as it includes a lot of close-ups of the band members faces to show the audience who they are, and the lyrics relate to the music video.

Breaking Benjamin - The Diary of Jane

Music Video: Breaking Benjamin – Diary of Jane
Genre: Rock

This narrative music video begins with panning long shots of the location of the video the music video reveals that they are in an abandoned mansion, which is a convention in a lot of popular rock music videos.
With an establishing long shot of the band in a large room filled with furniture you would expect to find in this location. The music video then cuts to a shot of a woman in a bathtub whose eyes open on beat to when the guitars and drums strat.
The natural lighting seems very dull and low key; this connotes a dark atmosphere to match the genre of the music. Most of the shots are close ups and mid shots on the lead singers face. Others consist of long shots of the whole band together with one or two close ups of the other band members.
Shots of the woman roaming about the mansion connects with the music lyrics as they refer to the woman how she is dressed in a white gown (conveys innocence) and how the whole song about “the diary of Jane”. A link between the visuals and the lyrics how the singer says, “look the other way” it then cuts to the mid shot of the woman as she turns to look over her shoulder.
Shots between the band and the woman seem to be from two different worlds. When the woman enters the same room as the band, the band is not there. This is an example of cross cutting where the two shots meet in one place. However, how the band disappears as the woman enters the room suggests that either the woman or the band members are ghosts.
There is some camera shake used in this music video, this is as the music kicks in and the shake matches the movements that the band members create.
The costume of the band members and their arrangement are all stereotypes of heavy rock music what they wear is stereotypical because it is mostly all black clothing and bandannas and the main singer is stood at the front as main focus of the audience’s attention. The guitarist and bass player are behind the singer and the drummer is at the back behind the singer.

Change of plans

Originally the genre of music was chosen was due to our choice in music and what music video we wanted to create. But the music provided too much foul language.
The genre was dubstep music but due to the change we have now switched to rock music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pI0Kwutugeg&ob=av2e
The link above is the origonal music we has selected. But as you can hear if you listen to the music there is a lot of bad language.

We explored our options with our original idea like muting the bad language. However we found that the end product would not be as effective with the muting involved.

First Of The Year - Skrillex Music Video Analysis 1

Music Video: First Of The Year (Equinox) – Skrillex

Genre: Dubstep

The narrative of this music video is of a sinister looking man stalking an innocent appearing child. However the child appears to be possessed by a demon and attacks the man.

The music video starts with a close up of a man’s hands with a key prop of a sweet. The camera then moves upward to show a close up of the man’s face. It then cut to a shot of the man from behind revealing his location at a children’s playground.

It is common in music videos of this category to cut to different shots in beat to the music. This is demonstrated in this music video often.

After this there is a cut in beat with the music starting to a mid shot of a young girl skipping down the road. The mid shot reveals objects behind her, in this case the man. The man follows the girl down this road and down some steps into a cellar. During this there are cut shots of close ups of the man’s face and mid shots of the girl, these cuts occur in beat with the music.

In the cellar, the lighting becomes dim in contrast to the bright natural lighting they had when outside. This suggests the possibility of something sinister might occur, the mid shot of the man displays him in the new setting and then cut to the beat again of him using the key prop of what might be chloroform which reveals the mans intentions.

Then the music video cuts the a shot of the girls chest revealing a baby doll’s arm in her dungarees pocket, as well as a cable leading down from her face. Then it cuts in beat to a medium shot of the man looking sinister as he approaches the girl. It then cuts again to the beat to the camera moving up to the girl’s face to show her using a key prop of a red phone. After, there is a shallow depth of field shot of the rest of the phone in her hand with the man out of focus in the back of the shot.

After this there is a mid shot of the man facing the girl. It then cuts to a close up of the girl’s face that looks up toward the camera and then screams words in lip sink with the music.

The music then takes it up a beat and the music video shows the man being thrown about in the air, believed to be done by the girl who until this point appeared innocent, and now seems to be possessed by a demon.

Goodwin’s theory is put into place in the video, as the music demonstrates some genre stereotypes of the dubstep. The visuals relate to the music itself the editing of the video goes with the music behind it, there are no lyrics to this song so the sound portrays all the emotions and relates to the audience. There are no close ups of the artist as the artist does not appear in the video this goes against Goodwin’s theory because even though he is a relatively new artist he does not get the recognition in his own video as other genres would.

All the shots appear in slow motion of the man and also rewind to fast-forward while matching the rhythm to the music. The effects around the girl are good considering how they used visual effects and used them in beat to the music. This is a common thing to see in this music genre, as it is a major characteristic in the dubstep music videos.
